Obtain a billing number from the Ministry of Health. Physicians must register with the provincial health ministry to receive a billing number before submitting claims.
Learn the Schedule of Benefits. Physicians should review the Ministry's billing manual relevant to their specialty to understand available billing codes and the criteria for using them correctly.
Stay current with policy updates. Receiving physician bulletins ensures awareness of changes to billing codes, coverage rules, accreditation requirements, and eligibility criteria.
Register with MCEDT for electronic claims submission.
Register with MedAvie Blue Cross for military and refugee health billing, if applicable. Physicians who expect to treat refugee and/or military patients should obtain a provider number with MedAvie Blue Cross, as this is required for submitting those claims.
Clarify billing responsibilities in hospitals or group practices. Physicians should determine:
Who submits claims.
Whether third-party claims (private insurance, out-of-province plans, refugee health coverage, etc.) are handled.
Who reconciles payments and follows up on unpaid claims.
Whether use of the group's billing services is mandatory.
Consider hiring a billing agent. Billing specialists can assist with coding, claim submission, payment reconciliation, denial management, and maximizing appropriate reimbursement while physicians learn the billing system.
